FRIENDS OF CRAB ORCHARD MEETING MINUTES 9/04/08 Meeting called to order at 6:35pm. In attendance were: Steve, Rose, Clark, Rhoda, Colleen, Dave G., Doc, Rosalita, Paula, Vicki and Neal and Jenn from the Refuge. Colleen moved and Doc 2nd the August 7 minutes. Clark moved and Vicki 2nd Treasurer report for approval. $936 check was written to purchase gravel for the River to River Trail. 2 new members have joined.
Old Business:
Website is up and running. Membership application will be added soon. We are not set up to accept payment for membership on line. Steve will check into this. Annual meeting will be next month in October. Colleen will organize light refreshments.Nominating committee consists of Colleen, Doc and Roy. Steve, Rose and Vicki will remain as Officers and nominations for Perry Young as 1st vice president and Roy Frank as 2nd vice president will be presented at this annual meeting.
New Business:
Modern Woodsmen of America have secured 2 grants for the Friends. $250 will be to purchase and plant a tree. Neal will coordinate the location with them. $500 will be for any item(s) we recommend. Neal will consult with CONWR and follow up with the Friends. Colleen moved and Dave 2nd to accept these grants. A matching grant was secured of $1,200 to use during Crab Orchard’s fall clean up on 9/20/08. Colleen moved and Dave 2nd this. Friends will provide the food
consisting of hot dogs, chips, soda, water and snack cakes. Revised t-shirts will be ordered this year. Jennifer showed sample artwork. Participants will receive a tshirt, lunch and a certificate to the National Lands. 95 people have signed up for the clean up so far. Dave inquired if someone would be available during the Friends events to take pictures to put on the Website. Anyone interested please let a board member know..
Steve recruited Linda May from Energy to help with grant writing.
One box shoot fund raiser for JA Logan College on October 11th.
Committee Reports:
Merchandise: Additional merchandise has been ordered for the bookstore and in anticipation for Hunting and Fishing Days in late September.
Wetlands: The wetland area near A-41 ponds has been completed. The state biologist, Rich Whitney agreed that the Blue Heron Pond would create a great wetland area. This area will be done next.
Photo Contest: Ron is running a commercial on Channel 3 for the photo contest. October 12th is the reception for the awards.
USFWS report: With 5 openings, Dan has restructured some of the positions at the Refuge. A Deputy Manager will be hired as first priority. Fred Laska has filled the maintenance
supervisor position. John has left for Texas and Karin will leave October 4th. Students will continue to offer environmental education activities.
Devil’s Kitchen Lake will be lowered to work on the dam. Docks will be replaced and work on a wave break at Playport Marina. Houseboats will be able to return soon. Concession at campgrounds will be ready to bid on.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45pm. Annual membership of $10 is now due. Next meeting is at 6:30pm on October 2nd at the Visitor’s Center.
This will be our annual meeting so everyone is encouraged to attend and bring a friend and/or family member.
