Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge – Minutes, Jan 5, 2012
The meeting was called to order by president Stephen May at 6:30 pm. Members present: Anne Johnson, Linda May, Stephen May, Vicky Lang-Mendenhall, Doc Schaede, Marlene Schaede, Laurel Wendt, and Perry Young. Refuge personnel present: Kim King-Wrenn.
The minutes of December 1, 2011 were approved as written.
The Treasurer’s report was approved on a motion by Doc and second by Linda.
Old Business: The Goose Draw is staffed through January. If a meeting with the hunters is to be scheduled in February, it will be decided at the next meeting.
Student interns: One of the students has declined to participate. Kim is waiting for word from the second student.
New Business: The board OK’d the request for money to buy refreshments for a new program – a bird count for kids.
Eagle Tours: The dates are: January 21st and 22nd, and Jan 28th and 29th. A meeting for volunteers is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday Jan. 18th,time to be decided.
Committees: The merchandise committee is working well. Wetlands: The waterfowl migration has been poor. Crab Orchard Refuge, however, had the largest population of geese (500) and ducks (9000)in the southern zone, on December 27th when the survey was taken.
Photo contest: A change in the date for the contest is being considered with awards given out in November (rather than in hectic October).
Refuge report: Several changes in the biology staff are expected. One maintenance worker is also leaving. There is hope that the positions can be filled soon. Doug went to the manager’s meeting and reported that the overall budget is better than expected. The coming summer activities will feature “Paddling” events. Controlled burns have been scheduled when the weather cooperates. Timber thinning across from Rocky Bluff trail has been started. The fate of the Headquarters building, i.e. to repair or rebuild, is still in limbo.
Respectfully submitted: Anne Johnson, Secretary.
Next meeting: February 2nd, 6:30 at the Visitor Center.
Please note: Our time to pay dues has arrived. If your last dues were paid prior to October, 2011, it’s time to pay your $10 dues for 2012. Please send a check to Rose Howerton, 1005 Russell St., Carterville, IL 62918
Better yet: Come to the next meeting, check in hand, and join in discussion to help the Refuge!
