FRIENDS OF CRAB ORCHARD MEETING MINUTES 12/4/08 Meeting called to order at 6:35pm. In attendance were Steve, Clark, Anne, Rhoda, Ron, Colleen, Doc, Perry, Marlene, Rose, Vicki, Rosalita, Laurie, Bob and USFWS staff Dan, Neil and Mike Brown. November minutes were motioned by Doc and 2nd by Colleen. Anne motioned and Ron 2nd treasurer report for approval. Old Business: It was clarified that the 10% discount for the bookstore is for Friends members only. Colleen and Rosalita are planning to attend the Friends conference in February. Colleen reported Modern Woodsmen is seeking publicity with the boy scouts for the $750 grant. New Business: Our January 2009 meeting falls on New Years Day. Vicki motioned and Rose 2nd that the upcoming January meeting be skipped. Perry suggested we consider the purchase of a split rail fence similar to what exists on the Refuge at the entrance of the Visitor’s Center.
Rose reported $600 spent for a hunting video to have in time for deer season. At least half of them have already sold as the hunters come in for the deer check-in. Doc suggested with agreement from everyone that we do not renew our logo on the Kroger pharmacy bags. Ron addressed ways to promote the bookstore as well as the Website. Vicki suggested a coupon in the papers for a bookstore discount.
Doc reports ducks have gravitated to Southern Illinois rather than being up north. The Refuge reported 11,000 ducks at Crab Orchard and 8,000 at Cypress Creek.
There were 99 entries for the contest, less than usual yet there was still a profit. Grant Committee: Linda and Jennifer are working together on this.
USFWS report:
2nd shotgun deer season is currently underway.
The new area 2 Refuge Manager (Dan’s boss) came to visit Crab Orchard NWR.
Assistant Manager position was filled by Rick Spears from Mingo NWR.
The break wall at the Crab Orchard Marina renovation is in progress.
The dam at the Visitor’s Center pond is being redesigned and rebuilt. Meeting adjourned at 7:15 pm. Annual membership of $10 is due.
